Advising Philosophy
Successful academic advisors empower students through collaborative relationships to develop individualized educational plans that help them realize their academic, professional and personal goals. Committed advising, I know from several years of experience, leads to greater success for our students and the wider community.
As an academic advisor, it is vital for me to consistently achieve the following:
Care – Every student is different, with unique circumstances, challenges and strengths. I take the time to get to know students, which clarifies my understanding of their specific backgrounds and needs, enabling us together to develop plans that encourage them to fulfill goals during their time at the University and after.
Scope – I address a wide range of academic and career-related questions either through advising students directly or referring them to appropriate resources and offices on campus for assistance. To do this well, I stay informed about undergraduate program offerings, advanced degrees and internships as well as other options that support students’ pursuits of careers and lifelong learning objectives.
Effectiveness – My goal for every student is for them to walk away from advisement sessions more knowledgeable of available resources. I view advisement sessions as “teaching moments” during which students learn about how to plan, what to consider, what to research and where to find specific information that will help them in the decision-making process, fostering a greater sense of self-determination.
Understanding – I provide every student with support as they balance their academic, professional and personal responsibilities and challenges.
Accessibility – I strive to deliver undivided attention to students during scheduled appointments and walk-in times as well as through e-mail advisement and phone conferencing. I make every effort to be approachable and easy to talk to, always working to establish trust and build strong connections.
Quality – I have received advanced training and professional development to meet the evolving needs of DSU’s student body and continue to seek out these opportunities. A good academic advisor needs to stay abreast of new and updated DSU policies and procedures, General Education requirements and degree and course offerings to provide the best and most accurate advisement.
It is my core belief that advisors who help students the most are those who invest their work with knowledge, empathy and creativity, an ambition I aim to fulfill each day at Dixie State.
